Being sexy isn’t all about sex. It’s about confidence and having pride in yourself. It’s about making a statement, being bold, daring to be different. It’s about feeling good, looking good, and dressing even better!
What’s in our closets say a lot about who we are as individuals. Our fashion sense is key to determining many details about our personalities; but not everything in our closets can be seen. Many would be surprised by the number of seemingly sexy men and women that have some ugly skeletons in their closets. Strutting in a Marc Jacobs off-the-shoulder, taffeta dress or sporting a Roberto Cavalli slim cut, tweed suit may look sexy on some; but shaking out a suit that you had tossed on the floor of your closet is not sexy at all! You’ve got to have it together both in the streets and behind closed doors.
One must have a well-organized wardrobe. It’s so much easier to find that head-turning outfit when you can see it clearly and it’s in wearable condition. Nothing is more unattractive than pulling out a crumpled shirt that you spent hours ironing in the first place, giving the material those horrible shine marks. Divide your wardrobe in two sections: tops on one side, bottoms on the other. This way, you can gauge if the percentages of tops versus bottoms is correct. This makes coordinating your wardrobe easy, provided you have the right combinations.
Don’t divide your wardrobe into a “dressy” section and a “casual” section. Hang all your jackets together, all your shirts together, and all your bottoms together. You are then able to mix and match easily. There’s nothing wrong pairing a dressier item with something more casual, like a wool blazer with a pair dark denim jeans.
Now gentlemen and ladies, please take care of your clothes. Throw out all wire hangers—Joan Crawford wasn’t that crazy! Not only do they ruin the shape of your garments, but they cause creasing. Try not to use too many different styles of hangers, as your clothing will hang unevenly. Use quality hangers throughout your wardrobe. I suggest wooden or molded plastic hangers
So you went out and purchased some Jimmy Choos for a couple hundred dollars. That’s great, so let’s not have a swap meet mentality. Don’t throw your shoes in a pile on the floor but keep them well organized and polished. Pack them on shoe racks or store them in shoeboxes with a photograph of the shoe on the outside of the box for easy identification. They will last much longer this way. You can pack tissue paper into the toes of shoes stored for a season if you want them to keep their shape, but cedar shoe trees work best.
Last but certainly not least, throw out everything you haven’t worn in at least two years. Anything that doesn’t fit or flatter must go! All fashion fads and impulse buys that you thought you just had to have, trust me—you don’t. And say goodbye to styles that you “might fit into one day.” Sure you’ll be able to, but wouldn’t you rather go out and buy something new (on sale, of course)? You’ll deserve it. Clothes that are just sitting in your closet are not only collecting dust, but being withheld from people who could much rather benefit from them. Donate these items to the Salvation Army, shelters, or charities. Being generous is a very good look.
Following these simple guidelines will give you the confidence to be fashionably forward every time. You won’t just think you look good, you’ll know it; and everyone else will too. So let’s not find ourselves trapped in the closet. Get it in order and come out.
