What I have come to realize is that most people are only interested in seeing changes in their health. Whether losing a few pounds, getting adequate physical activity, or making healthy food choices, many want the results but do not want to do what it takes to get there. For people like this there is always an excuse for why today is not the day. Excuses like, I forgot by gym clothes, I don’t like to eat that or it’s too cold outside to run are evidence that one is really not committed to seeing a change. However, those who are successful at living a healthy lifestyle are committed to doing whatever it takes. Losing weight and keeping it off, going for a jog whether rain or shine, or making permanent changes in their diet are just a few examples of how one commits to living a healthy lifestyle.
Very rarely will someone become committed overnight. In fact it truly takes time, determination and an unrelenting commitment to building a healthy lifestyle. It requires building solid rituals that eventually become habits. Here are a few tips that may help you become one step closer to becoming committed to the lifestyle changes you seek.
Makes your fitness goals a priority. Reaching your health and fitness goals have to be a top priority. Setting small, realistic goals that will gradually bring you closer to your ultimate goals is key factor in your success. Once you’ve identified your goals, set a plan of action that entails the who, what, where, why, and how of reaching your goals. We find time for what’s important to us.
Be honest with yourself
The fundamental question is what are you willing to give up in order to make the change occur? Maybe losing a few pounds requires changing your nutritional patterns, joining a gym, getting a personal trainer or seeking the guidance of a nutritionist. Once you are willing to make certain sacrifices you will be open to seeing your goals as a reality.
Set yourself up for success.
The reality is that life will get in the way, things will come up, and obstacles will make the journey challenging. I like to call this always have a plan B. Often times unexpected events will happen and get you off your routine. Having an alternative plan ensures you are ready to meet the challenges when they occur. I always encourage clients to keep an extra pair of shoes and workout clothes in their office or car just in case you leave your workout bag at home. Another option is to have an alternative workout that you can do at home or while traveling just in case your plans to get to the gym are a bust.
Get support
Whether you round up a workout buddy, enlist a roommate, coworker or friend; have someone to hold you accountable and share in your success. Having the right support is essential to making through the ups and downs of getting fit. Hiring a personal trainer or nutritionist for a one or two session a week is great way to build structure to your newly formed habits.
Reward Yourself
This is my favorite. When you see good results, get compliments, or reach a milestone you should feel proud of your accomplishments. I always suggest to my clients to set up simple rewards that will keep them motivated and striving for the next goal. If you lose 5, 10, or 20lbs treat yourself to new outfit. If you and your workout buddy make it to the gym consistently for the month treat yourselves to a day at the spa. Whatever the achievement reward yourself along the way.
Stick to these tips you will be well on your way to seeing the results you set out for, feeling more confident, and looking for like someone who is truly committed to living fit.
