Cursed Haiti

The Rev. Pat Robertson, on his CBN broadcast, offered his own explanation of the earthquake in Haiti:
“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” he said. “They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.’ “True story. And the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal,’” Robertson said. “Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another.”

Gang violence has been a countrywide problem for decades, sensationalized through music and portrayed in beloved films like The Godfather and Boyz n the Hood. While media attention would lead one to believe that the violence reached its peak in the 1990’s, gangs are becoming an increasingly large threat to the Native American community on reservation land.

“Tu’u muamua le Atua i mea uma”. 
It’s a Samoan phrase, meaning “When all comes down to nothing, God is up to something.”  Or, at least, I hope that’s what it means.  I just looked it up on the internet.  Much to my chagrin, I may be Samoan, but I only really know the dirty words.
